Wu Bixia is a renowned opera singer from China. Possessing a gentle lyric coloratura soprano, Wu Bixia became the first Chinese singer to master both the traditional Chinese folk singing style and the European bel canto technique, skillfully blending them in her performances.
Wu Bixia has won numerous prestigious awards. Among her achievements are the first prize for folk singing at the National Vocal Competition of China (1996) and the VIII International Competition in Bilbao (Spain), as well as second place at the XII International Tchaikovsky Competition and many other notable awards.
The singer’s repertoire covers a wide range of vocal works, including the operas “Rigoletto” by Verdi, “Gianni Schicchi” by Puccini, the Chinese opera “The Marriage of Xiao Erhei,” oratorios, and vocal concerts. Wu Bixia has given over a hundred solo concerts and recorded 20 albums. Her popular online performances have also received wide acclaim.
Currently, Wu Bixia heads the Department of Vocal and Opera and serves as the Director of the Institute of Chinese Vocal Art at the China Conservatory of Music. She is a professor and a doctoral supervisor.
Wu Bixia frequently serves as a jury member at major competitions, including the German international vocal contests Neue Stimmen and Voci Verdiane, China’s “Golden Bell” Music Award, the “Wenhua” Award from China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and various state- supported national talent programs. She has also been a reviewer for the National Arts Fund of China and the Beijing Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
