The festival emerged as the socialist countries’ premier musical showcase —a cultural bridge between East and West, and the direct precursor to the Intervision. Tamara Miansarova took first place with her song “May There Always Be Sunshine”.

Originally composed by Mark Fradkin and Robert Rozhdestvensky, the song was specially adapted for the contest with the creators’ direct involvement. The exclusive new orchestral arrangement for the Sopot Festival intensified its emotional power and secured the decisive victory.

The Soviet singer captivated the jury and the audience at the Sopot Festival, winning the Grand Prix A record nine encores were demanded – compelling organizers to break protocol and grant a repeat of her winning performance.

The legendary Soviet singer won the Grand Prix with her stunning performance of “Kings Can Do Anything”—yet another triumphant victory for the USSR. Her powerful stage presence electrified the Polish audience, creating one of the most memorable moments in the festival’s history.

Boney M made history as the first Western act to perform at Intervision. Among the songs played was “Rasputin” — later Cut from the broadcast from television broadcasts. Meanwhile, Soviet artist Jaak Joala earned third place with his memorable performance of “Find the Right Music”.

Rising Soviet star Anne Veski from the Estonian SSR swept the competition, claiming two first prizes, including for “Beyond the Sharp Turn” — a hit that brought her unprecedented fame across the Soviet Union.

The Sopot Festival’s organizing body, the international broadcasting organization OIRT, merged with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), marking the definitive end of the Intervision era in 20th century music history.

The festival debuted in Sochi as “Five Stars. Intervision”, bringing together artists from 11 countries on one stage. This marked the first step in restoring the legendary music contest to television screens after the USSR’s dissolution.
