Music and Statesman Jorge Ignacio Zorro Sánchez Joins the “Intervision” Jury from Colombia

Colombian conductor, educator, and statesman Jorge Ignacio Zorro Sánchez will join the International Professional Jury of “Intervision”. The maestro has an impressive biography closely linked to both music and high-level public service.

In 2022, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Culture of Colombia, and a year later he served as Acting Minister. In May 2025, by decree of the President of the Republic, Jorge Ignacio Zorro Sánchez was confirmed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Colombia to the Russian Federation.

He received his musical education at the Conservatory of the National University of Colombia and then studied at the school of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he won a choral conducting competition. Jorge Zorro Sánchez continued his studies at prestigious institutions in Europe and the USA: the Freiburg University of Music, and later in the USA at the Berkshire Music Center (Tanglewood) under Leonard Bernstein, the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), and Boston University.

The maestro has made a significant contribution to the development of Colombian culture. He founded the Higher School of Music of the Institute of Culture of Tunja, led the UNIMÚSICA Foundation for Research and Development of Music Education Programs for over twenty years, and for two decades headed the Faculty of Music at the Juan N. Corpas Foundation, which was also established on his initiative. Furthermore, Jorge Zorro Sánchez led the Colombian Choral and Orchestral Corporation, managed the large-scale project “Training Musicians for Colombia” under the auspices of the OAS, and served as director of the “Antonio María Valencia” Conservatory in Cali.

As a conductor, he has worked with leading vocal and symphonic ensembles, serving as both permanent and guest director. He is also a recognized expert in music education: he has participated in key international conferences, was a member of the National Music Council COLCULTURA, and served on the jury for selecting scholarship recipients for overseas study in musical disciplines.

Currently, Jorge Ignacio Zorro Sánchez oversees the significant state program “Music as a Tool for Peacebuilding,” initiated by President Gustavo Petro.
